Overproduction is a serious issue that is not being discussed enough. According to United States Environmental Protection Agency, around 11.9 million tons of clothing and footwear were produced in 2015 in the United States alone with around 8.2 million of it ended up in landfill. Furthermore, according to Ellen MacArthur Foundation (source from Fashion Revolution), around 3% of retail stock is overstock which means it will be incinerated or sent to landfill.

As a vegan brand, we care not only about animal welfare but also the environment, and therefore we are committed to reasonable and responsible production. Despite the higher production cost, we produce small collections in small batches despite because it is healthier for the fashion industry and for the sustainability of our world.

 

In 2022 we will be taking another step forward to becoming more sustainable by focusing on handmade, made-to-order and low waste products.

Currently over 95% of our products are handmade by Monica. Each product is designed and made with care and love, with lots of thoughts put in to it.

Our few non-handmade items are produced by a manufacturer that has passed the AI ethical audit and Sedex SMETA (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit) based in Guangzhou city.

 

We are very proud that our products are produced ethically, slowly and responsibly!

Majority of fashion items including clothing, handbags and jewellery are individually packed in clear plastic bags after production to protect them from getting dirty or damaged during shipment from the manufacturer to the retail store or warehouse. Some items such as handbags are even stuffed with plastic air bubble cushion to keep them in shape. These packaging materials are usually single-use, non-recyclable and non-biodegradable, and most likely end up in landfill or even in the ocean.

We were absolutely horrified to find out the amount of plastic packaging used in production and we certainly want to do better so we pack all our products in a reusable dust bag or recyclable tissue paper and we use paper stuffing only when necessary. We currently do not use any plastic in our product packaging.

As of June 2022, all our orders are shipped in 100% recyclable cardboard boxes or kraft padded envelopes.

 

You might be thinking - Wait, but aren’t padded envelopes lined with plastic bubble wrap which is bad for the environment?

Don't worry, the kraft padded envelopes we use are filled with cushioning paper fibres instead of bubble wrap. Not only do the paper fibres provide outstanding protection but they are also made from 100% recycled materials. These padded envelopes are extremely tough and can be re-used many times.
We encourage our customers to double check all product information (eg. materials, colour, measurements) before making a purchase to avoid returning the item which would waste resources from packaging and carbon emissions from shipping/delivery transportation.
